Dr. Matthew (Matt) B. Massey is a fellowship-trained, board-certified, orthopaedic surgeon who specializes in orthopaedic injuries to the lower extremity, the knee, and the foot/ankle. The vast majority of Dr. Massey’s time is dedicated to sports injuries, arthroscopy, fracture repair, and tendon repair.
Dr. Massey earned his B.S. degree in microbiology (summa cum laude) from Mississippi State University. He earned his medical degree from the University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson, Mississippi. Dr. Massey’s orthopaedic training began at Louisiana State University in New Orleans, Louisiana and was completed at The Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston, South Carolina. He won the Siegling Society Award for Outstanding Clinical Research Paper while he was Chief Resident.
He pursued further specialty training in Foot and Ankle and Knee Sports Medicine from the prestigious Steadman Clinic and Steadman-Philippon Research Institute in Vail, Colorado and The Foundation for Orthopaedic, Athletic, and Reconstructive Research in Houston, Texas.
At the Steadman Clinic, he trained under world renowned sports medicine surgeons, Thomas Clanton, M.D. and Richard Steadman, M.D. Dr. Clanton is one of the leading experts in the field of foot and ankle sports medicine and is a consultant and surgeon for many high profile collegiate and professional athletes. Dr. Steadman is the founder of the Steadman Clinic and is regarded as one of the best knee surgeons in the world.
Throughout his career, he has also cared for professional athletes from the NFL, NBA, and MLB, as well as collegiate, high school, and recreational athletes. In addition, Dr. Massey was a medical provider at The Dew Tour Ski and Snowboard Competition in Breckenridge, Colorado.
Dr. Massey believes that orthopaedic care should be tailored to each patient ranging from nonsurgical treatment to arthroscopic tissue sparing techniques. Extensive physical therapy is also an important part of returning patients back to their sport or activity.
Whether treating a competitive athlete with an acute sports injury or helping an older patient with long standing arthritis, Dr. Massey enjoys helping patients choose a treatment plan that fits their individual needs to improve their quality of life. Dr. Massey performs both open and arthroscopic surgery and is pleased to offer total ankle replacement as a potential treatment option.
On a personal note, Dr. Massey enjoys cooking barbecue, traveling, landscape photography, skiing and spending time with his family.
